David has been practicing art all his life although he never went to art college. That said, David pursued technical art indirectly in drawing cartographic maps and rock slide illustrations during his geography and geology degree and later became involved in automotive design and product development while working at Ford who sponsored his mechanical engineering masters following his passion for cars and car design. Throughout the 1980’s David set up his own commercial art studio in focusing on graphic design, illustration and fine art commissions for a diverse range of clients. During this time David working producing technical illustrations for Gilbarco petrol pumps and later Ford Truck & Tractor work-shop manuals. Throughout the 1980’s and early 1990’s David supported private commissions, commercial business graphics, corporate literature and artworks for publishing houses for newspapers, magazines and books in a comprehensive range of subjects. David’s commercial art remit has covered a comprehensive variety of media and styles to suit client needs, from paintings in water colour, gouache and acrylic as well as air-brush and drawings in pencil and ink. The subject matter David has tackled has been equally comprehensive, ranging from automotive, aerospace, science fiction, fantasy, botanical, naturalistic, still life, landscapes, seascapes, sign writing and wall murals.
During the 1980’s David was actively involved in the MG Owners Club, as the Chelmsford and Essex Area leader and actively designed and produced MG and other sports car products including silk screened badges and body-stripes and all-weather cockpit covers and full car covers.
David was invited to become one the founding committee members of the Guild of Motoring Artists (GMA) at its inception in 1986, where David has been a full member since and in 2011 was elected as the Chairman of the GMA where he remains in position today
Whilst working at Ford Dunton in the past David has taught water colour art courses via Ford EDAP and organised many exhibitions at Ford for the GMA. David now paints for pleasure including within the GMA and the Southend Art Club, where he still exhibits and sells his work. Since the 1980’s to now in 2020, David has continued to work in the automotive design and product development business, from, Ford, Jaguar, Land Rover, Aston Martin, and more recently for the autonomous electric vehicle start-ups including SF-Motors, Zoox & Dyson and is now back at Ford on the electric Transit.
